Our story

Our mission

To improve communication, quality of life, and overall well-being for individuals and families affected by aphasia.

We lead the way in innovative, person-centered programs built on the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA). Through community-based programs, expert staff, and compassionate care, we are a trusted resource in the field — empowering people to reconnect with their lives and communities.

Our core values

Innovation

We love creative, forward-thinking approaches that improve communication and quality of life. We welcome new ideas from others.

Compassion

We treat every person with respect, dignity, and kindness. We know that living with aphasia is hard. Our work is based on understanding, support, and compassion.

Expertise

As leaders in the field, we deliver high-quality, evidence-informed programs. We also share our knowledge to benefit the larger community of professionals.

Inspiration

We empower individuals with aphasia and their families through hope, support, and meaningful connection. Each person’s story is unique and inspiring.

Excellence

We strive for excellence in every aspect of our work — from building strong, connected groups to engaging the wider community. We aim to provide every member with a high quality and meaningful experience.

Our history

The Aphasia Center of California (ACC), founded in 1996 by Dr. Roberta J. Elman, was the first independent nonprofit in the U.S. dedicated to providing direct services for people with aphasia.

Dr. Elman’s groundbreaking research — including a nationally funded 1994 study on group communication treatment — proved that individuals could continue making meaningful progress through regular “communication workouts”, helping many re-engage with their communities and lives.

Our approach

We take the time to get to know you and your family — both your communication needs and who you were before aphasia.

Our programs follow the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA), which focuses on the whole person — not just their speech.

Group support and communication strategies help members rebuild their lives and rejoin their communities.
